The Fire Inside

With three impressive EPs behind him, a good showing in the BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll and the patronage of producer Iain Archer (Snow Patrol, Jake Bugg), south London singer-songwriter Luke Sital-Singh’s debut album comes buoyed with expectation. It doesn’t disappoint. There are echoes of the stripped-back simplicity of Damien Rice, but he’s at his best on the more expansive Lilywhite and We Don’t Belong. There’s a tendency to be a little overblown at times (Nothing Stays the Same) and his lyrics err on the side of the tautological (“I can taste it in my mouth” รป really?), but this is a pleasant first step.
